Bookkeeping

The 15-minute monthly money routine

October 23, 2026 • By Madhusudan Aggarwal (MADHU)

Owners imagine bookkeeping as a weekend with a spreadsheet. It does not have to be. If your books are being kept monthly, your own job shrinks to a 15-minute review - four checks, once a month, same day each month.

Minute 0-4: Does the bank agree?

Compare your book balance to your bank balance. They will rarely be identical - checks in transit explain small gaps - but they should be close, and you should know why they differ.

Minute 4-8: Who owes you, and who do you owe?

Glance at unpaid invoices and upcoming bills. Anything owed to you past 30 days gets a friendly nudge today, not next month.

Minute 8-12: What actually happened?

Read your profit & loss like a story: what came in, what went out, what surprises you. A surprise is not a failure - it is next month's decision arriving early.

Minute 12-15: One decision

Pick one thing the numbers suggest - chase a payment, trim a subscription, set aside tax money - and do it while you are looking at it. Fifteen minutes, one decision, every month. That is how 'the books' stop being a year-end event and start being a steering wheel.

And if even this routine keeps slipping? That is the sign the keeping itself should be someone else's job. It is literally ours.

Sound familiar? Let's fix it.
